ESL Class for Refugees Teaches More Than Just Vocabulary
12/19/2011

“Hello everyone! How are you?” As the teacher greets the class, she notices something special about one of the students. What the teacher notices, is that one of the students in her Adult ESL Class for Refugees is eight months pregnant. Students’ questions and real life situations routinely shape ESL classes at Catholic Charities. This class, for instance, covers medical terms and hospital situations that will help this mother give birth in an American hospital. These life skills lessons are invaluable for newcomers to New Jersey. There are many special things about these students-- not the least of which is that they are Refugees, people who have fled their countries on the basis  [ ... ]

A Statement on Poverty in New Jersey by the Catholic Bishops of New Jersey
11/23/2011

The U.S Census Bureau recently confirmed that over 49 million Americans, or 16% of the population, live in poverty.  Similarly, the Legal Services of New Jersey Poverty Research Institute has documented the alarming depth and breadth of poverty in New Jersey – a state that is frequently ranked as the second or third richest state in the country.  In 2009, over 799,000 New Jersey residents had incomes lower than the official poverty rate - incomes so low that they were unable to make ends meet and required food stamps to survive. Sadly, although the poor are in the hundreds of thousands, they are often invisible to us.  As the plight of these, our brothers and sisters, continues to spir [ ... ]

Mr. Leoncio Diaz joined us as a volunteer in the Catholic Charities office in Vineland on November 16th 2010.  It is hard to describe the asset he has become to our operation.  His main focus has been organizing and inventory of our food pantry and bread box programs.

Nearly 5,000 families are given food through our pantry service each year. In 2011 Leoncio kept records: 1,911 families received bread, total of 4,223 persons within these families. The bread box is open every Wednesday from 9 - 11 AM. Leoncio spends 4 hours each day, packing food for our clients and staging them according to family size prior to distribution. Every morsel is accounted for because of Leoncio’s dedication to detail and each item is shelved, organized and awaiting distribution.

Beyond the food pantry services, Leoncio sees many things that need to be taken care of so he makes it his mission to fix, repair, clean, not to mention organize, every area within our facility.

As of December 1st 2011, he also has taken over the organization and distribution for the fresh fruit and vegetables to the 20 families in our Nutrition Health and Wellness Program, funded by United Way of Cumberland County.  This is a weekly distribution of fresh produce with preparation and recipe ideas, leading to a healthier life style using fresh rather than processed canned foods.

We are grateful to Leoncio for his service. His time and energy have helped many!
