In 1976, the governor of Massachusetts, Michael Dukakis, announced an Adoption Week for his state. Later that same year President Gerald Ford proclaimed that Adoption Week would be celebrated nationally. As more and more states started to participate in Adoption Week it became clear that more time was needed for holding events and in 1990 National Adoption Week became National Adoption Month.
Today National Adoption Month is celebrated during the month of November. The celebration usually includes National Adoption Day with courthouses throughout the nation participating and hundreds of adoptions being finalized simultaneously.

RESIDENCE: Couples are eligible if they live in the six counties of Southern New Jersey: Atlantic, Camden, Cape May, Cumberland, Gloucester, and Salem.
AGE RANGE: 23 years of age to mid 40's
RELIGION: Names are accepted from couples when both are practicing Catholics or when one is a member of another religion. It is with the understanding that the child will be raised in the Catholic faith.
Couples must have been married in a Catholic Church.
All couples must be endorsed by their pastors as being in good standing as members of their church and attending to their religious obligations.
LENGTH OF MARRIAGE: Couples must have been married three full years or more.
FAMILY SIZE: Preference is given to childless couples, however, we will accept applications from families with one child. |

 Catholic Charities, Diocese of Camden, Inc. is an agency licensed by the state of New Jersey, Office of Licensing to place children for adoption. Our adoption services strives to place infants and also young children with special needs with loving families in the Diocese of Camden.
Eligibility Information | Post Adoption Services
PROCESS
Initial contact -Screening is done by telephone and the couple is invited to an informational group meeting. Group meetings are held periodically and general information on adoption is discussed and questions answered. If a couple decides to proceed with a plan to adopt, a home study is initiated. All meetings are held at the Catholic Charities office in Vineland, NJ.
CHILDREN AVAILABLE
We provide domestic adoptions. We do not currently facilitate international adoptions.
VARIOUS SERVICES OFFERED

Home Study - Length of study time - Approximately 10 weeks
Definition: Adoption agencies conduct home studies to determine if prospective adoptive families are able to meet the psycho-social needs of the child available for adoption. The study consists of a minimum of three face-to-face interviews in the office and a home visit. Autobiographical statements, health statements, child abuse and criminal clearance, income statements, references etc, are obtained during this process.

Adoption Compliant Investigation:
The courts require a home study for families who are adopting the children of relatives or for those who are adopting children placed privately in their homes.

Catholic Charities believes that all persons affected by adoption have the right to know as much information about their birth relatives as possible. However, New Jersey law protects the confidentiality of all adoptions. Therefore Catholic Charities is not allowed by law to release any identifying information without prior consent of the affected party of parties. Any adult adoptee or birth parent may initiate a request for additional information. This is called a search.
Search:
A search involves a personal interview with the member of the triad requesting more information or face to face meeting. Counseling is provided to any member of the adoption triad (birth parents, adult adoptee, adoptive parents) and his/her family.
Catholic Charities will facilitate reunions between parents, adult adoptees and the extended family of adult adoptees when requested by either party. To begin the process the interested party must contact the post adoption counselor by letter and explain what information they are looking for. All non-identifying information can then be shared. If requested, the post adoption worker can attempt to contact the other party and the counselor will determine if reunion is desired. If a reunion is desired, then all involved parties shall participate in preparatory counseling with post adoption counselor. After counseling, the reunion will be held if all parties agree. Continued counseling is available if necessary or desired.
